Alternative art and culture is alive and rockin' in Houston. And this weekend performance artists from around the world, descend on the city.
The first ever Houston International Performance Art Biennale (better known as the Lone Star Explosion) takes place at DiverseWorks on Thursday, Avant Garden on Friday and notsuoH, Saturday. Performance art normally gets a bad rap. For good reason – it's more often than not, bad. But Lone Star Explosion is an exception, bringing together some of Houston's, and the world's, most interesting practitioners of live art.
The project was founded by Nestor Topchy (the creator of the amazing HIVE, a non-profit art and living community to be built this year) and top Dublin born performance artist, Myk Henry. With the added help of Houston painter, Kelly Alison and Jack Massing of The Art Guys, the organization is now a force of its own.
The event will include performance artists from all over the world including Elena Nestorova (Finland), Gim Gwang Cheol (South Korea), Orion Maxted (London), John Boehme and Natali Leduc (Canada), Marcus Vinicius (Brazil), Rodney Dickson (Northern Ireland), Non Grata (Estonia), Ville-Karel (Estonia) and 1KA (France) including Houston's own Jim Pirtle, French-based 1KA, as well as Non Grata, a group from Estonia.
What's really magical about this particular event is two of the locations - the beautiful, rambling, Avant Garden, and downtown's ramshackle notsouH (that's Houston spelt backwards, in case you're the last to know) provide such fantastic venues for performance art. In fact, along with the Warhous Studios, Super Happy Fun Land, Domy/Brasil and others, Houston has the makings of great city for performance art. True, it's been about 30 years in the making, but these things take time! Lone Star Explosion could provide just the spark we need to put Houston on the performance art map. That's probably a map painted in blood on bright blue vinyl that gets burnt afterwards – but still, like all good art, it'll make you look at things differently.
Ticket for individual events are $12. For more info. go to lonestarexplosion.org
