The Tavern on Gray

1340 W. Gray Houston, TX 77019 | 713.522.5152 | www.thetavernongray.com

It seems as though neighborhood sports bars have the magical ability to transform daily to suit a crowd's various nightlife requests. Take for instance, The Tavern on Gray. This Midtown/Montrose local favorite hosts a slew of weekly activities to entertain their loyal patrons like Tuesday night karaoke contests, Wednesday and Sunday steak nights, and game watching most other days on one of the 100 plus televisions. Pool tables and Ping Pong table abound. Munch on some predictable yet tasty bar food including pizzas, burgers and the likes while listening to your fellow bar mates belt out versions of Joan Jett's songs attempting desperately to win that karaoke cash prize. A couple more drinks and you'll be warbling to Katy Perry in no time.

Fox & Hound Smokehouse and Tavern

12802 Gulf Fwy; Houston, TX 77034 | 281-481-0068 | www.foxandhound.com

Burgers, beer and basketball (or any game for that matter, it was just a matter of alliteration). Fox & Hound is well known for its lax atmosphere but pegs itself an upscale sports bar where patrons can enjoy a loungier feel while playing games of pool or mingling with other guests at the bar. The food is better than sub-par bar fare and includes grilled food items and most nights, the crowd is fair. This is a great alternative to your regular go-to game watching bar.

Slick Willies

1200 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX | (713) 522-2525

5913 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX | (713) 781-5913

Like most Slick Willies establishments, you can count on good, cheap beer and enough pool tables so you don't spend all night waiting for an opening. Situated right at Westheimer and Montrose, people-watching abounds with freaks, geeks, and a few misdirected chics. Great happy hour specials, but steer clear of the bar food. Scariest. Nachos. Ever.
